Slim and Proper Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong China is an amazing place. Since World War 2, right up until the late 70's, there were almost no armed robberies, no drug trafficking, no prostitution and the nation was so fit and healthy that no-one needed to lose weight. "Wow! That's amazing!" you say. Well, that's true, but we need to add a little explanation. To start with, there was no money to steal, which didn't encourage robbers, total isolation from the rest of the world and strict control of normal activities within China preventing drug trafficking and prostitution and, finally, the low living standards, simply did not allow many Chinese to put on weight. But that's in the past, now China is becoming one of the world's leading economies. There's much more freedom and democracy (despite some western "democracy pushers" who would like to see the kind of changes that happened in the west over a period of more than a century to happen instantly in China), there's much more money and, unfortunately, much more crime, prostitution and everything else that goes with it. And of course, with the improved living standard, many Chinese end up with weight problems. Among them, there was quite a big percentage of children and young adults who were born under the scheme of the so called "one child policy" that was introduced some 30 years ago, in order to reduce their enormous population (the results of which were highly praised by the United Nations and the side effects of which were bitterly criticized by many western groups and individuals). What happened was that those "little darlings" or some call them "little monsters" grew up in the limelight and the whole world spun around them, with everyone treating them like little last emperors and empresses and always giving them the best food (and lots of it) to be 'strong and healthy'. Well, many overdid it, and the time had come to do something about it. However, one thing must be stressed - in comparison to western developed countries, the Chinese population is still much slimmer and their eating habits, in many ways, much healthier than ours. Anyway, something that once was unheard of in China, suddenly became a reality - weight loss hype. "OK, you've got a problem, we've got the solution", said the Chinese medicine practitioners and Qigong masters, as the concerned crowd started queuing up at the door and turning towards them for help. Indeed, as far as they were concerned, there was always an answer. No matter how you look at things in Chinese medicine, it's always the same old story - any disease or condition (disorder, problem - call it what you will), physical or mental, is always a result of the imbalance of chi (life energy) that circulates through our body, and to treat it, all one has to do, is correct the chi energy imbalance. So, it's always a wholistic treatment, even if the problem appears to be local. Body weight within normal limits, is a sign of a relative energy balance, otherwise, it requires attention. And so, Chinese medicine practitioners got very busy. They used Chinese herbs, acupuncture, Chinese massage, ear acupressure and the overall response was pretty good. Many of them opened specialist clinics and dedicated their practice entirely to weight loss. But sometimes the patient would have to come for many sessions over a period of several months, so both time and money invested in the adventure would be considerable. For that reason, some patients searched for other options. Qigong was one of those options. Many people who practiced it purely to get rid of their illnesses lost excess weight along the way. That made many others who had weight problems take up the practice and they got similar results. But what made a whole 'weight loss revolution' among the bulky Chinese is the appearance of a Qigong style by the name of Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong (or simply Slimming Qigong) in the late 80's - first in Beijing and then all over China. A set of three simple exercises that involves special breathing techniques and concentration (meant to be practiced three times a day) brought permanent relief to many desperate Chinese, often within only a month or two. This type of treatment, it seemed, had it all - it was easy to do, being a self treatment gave the individuals the independence from others, was very effective, not only helped with weight problems but it treated many chronic illnesses at the same time, it improved concentration and study and, what was very interesting too was that, the heavier the person, the better results it brought. The founders of Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong were two Qigong practitioners, one of them a lady doctor, Qigong enthusiast and teacher, and the other one an elderly gentleman, an experienced Qigong practitioner. Both of them came across many techniques in old forms of Qigong that were very effective in combating body fat, so they selected and combined a few of them into a new form and simply called it Weigh Loss and Beauty Qigong. Indeed, it is a very good beauty therapy at the same time. Not only that it would get rid of excess kilos, but the skin would stay firm and smooth around the area where the fat used to be. Despite the fact that, in some cases, there would be a reduction of 30 or more kilos (approx. 70lbs). It is especially good for the skin on the face and hair, making it lustrous and shiny. Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong (most of it) is done sitting down and it involves special breathing techniques combined with some meditation. It consists of three exercises, two of which are to be performed daily and the third only when (or if) necessary. The whole set works on improving blood circulation and the flow of chi energy, especially around the abdomen where most fat tissue tends to accumulate. Putting on weight (in this Qigong) is compared to stagnant water where due to passivity all the dirt accumulates, while rivers and other running water tend to be clear. People who put on weight tend to breathe very shallow, so their abdomen does not move much. So, the first main exercise, in order to achieve a better chi energy flow, involves deep abdominal breathing which stimulates the digestive system, promotes blood circulation around the fat tissue thus "washing it away" and gives a very good massage to the inner organs, especially to the stomach and intestines. The activated fat tissue supplies the body with energy so no food intake is required. The second major exercise involves regulating the breath and slowing it down, enabling the practitioner to reach a meditative state, known as "genuine sleep". Five minutes in "genuine sleep" state, in which the body reaches a high state of repair, is equivalent to one hour of quality sleep. In other words, when we normally sleep, out of seven or eight hours, there is about one hour of "genuine sleep" where all the rebalancing takes place. That means that, even if we sleep much less, but we reach this state, we still get a good rest. However, if we miss out on getting "genuine sleep" (some people never reach this state), we can sleep twelve hours and still wake up tired and exhausted. The third exercise also known as "anti-hunger exercise" is only a couple of minutes long and it requires no mind focusing. It is basically a simple rapid breathing technique that effectively combats hunger and is practiced only when necessary, in other words if the practitioner experiences hunger during the course of practice. You can do it sitting, laying, walking and basically anywhere, anytime. Even though it is very effective in combating hunger, one cannot and should not only rely on this technique to lose weight for the reasons mentioned in the following article. The two main exercises are the key to losing weight and treating disease while the third one is simply used as an assisting tool and sometimes may never be needed. Weight Loss Qigong - How it Works? There's no doubt that Weight Loss Qigong works, when it comes to losing weight. Tens of thousands of successful cases and a stack of scientific studies in China proved it over and over in the first ten years of its creation. But how does it work? What's the key element of its success, and can it be explained in simple terms? Well, like always, when it comes to Qigong, there are things that can be explained and those that cannot. The things that are hard to explain (and would take many, many pages) are the ones that have something to do with chi (life energy) and how it works, so we won't dwell on that. What we will do, is explain things that are explainable - based on fact and common sense. So, let's draw some parallels. Let's start with a simple question: What would be the easiest and safest way to control the fire? Obviously by controlling the supply of gas or fuel or whatever else is burning. Body weight is very much like fire. The more food (fuel) the more chances of putting on weight. Once the weight is over a certain limit it creates a vicious circle where excess weight leads to more excess weight. Just think this way: People who are overweight constantly carry a spare tyre (or many spare tyres) wherever they go. It's hard work and it requires much more energy than those without the problem. And where do you get it from? By eating more. Unfortunately by eating more, all the inner organs work harder - to digest the food, absorb it, distribute it to more places and so on. At the same time, the heart and lungs have to work harder to supply all those poor muscles and joints with more blood and oxygen and to get rid of more products of metabolism. So the person gets tired, sweaty, puffed and in the end lacks all the good stuff. Many vital tissues, including the brain, lack nutrients and oxygen, so the person often cannot concentrate and they don't like to move much which in turn leads to putting on more weight. And that is not even the worst thing. As a result of such intensive wear and tear, many organs and tissues start to break down and lead to injuries and illnesses. Such as overused joints, blood vessels, heart, kidneys, liver... All the scientific data clearly demonstrate that the heavier the person the more diseases they suffer from and the shorter their life span (compared with the same age people). Eg. overweight people suffer on average 5 times more from angina than those whose body weight is within normal limits, diabetes is 6 times more prevalent in such people, number of overweight people dying from diabetes is double compared to those with normal weight, and more than double of them die as a result of heart and kidney failure. People with excess weight have death rate 25%-50% higher than people of the same age but with normal weight. And so on, and so on... "Come on, burn that fat! 1, 2, 3, 4 ... No pain, no gain!", so the fitness instructors keep telling us. Treadmills and bicycles are waiting for us, and of course more weights to lift. Unfortunately, an hour of burning a certain amount of calories, can be easily undone after a mouthful of dessert and nibbles. Plus, did you ever really think of the meaning of the word "burn"? What happens to your body after you burn 10, 20 or in some cases over 50 kilos of body fat? Especially if you do it over and over. You don't have to be a genius to figure it out - your body gets "burned". In other words, you end up looking much older, your skin gets creased and less elastic and sometimes your health deteriorates as well. So, how does this ‘magic' Qigong work? Or, what is so special about it? As if this "bullshit" theory of not eating to reduce weight wasn't already being tested by so many people in the west. Well, bare with us for a second, the trick is not exactly in not eating. Let's see what would happen to many overweight people, if they simply stopped eating for a few days. Theoretically speaking, having excess weight, their body would use all that fat and turn it into energy needed for normal life activities and they would lose their weight. Realistically though, they would feel extreme hunger, feel exhausted, see black spots in front of their eyes and end up pale with cold sweats and shaky hands. In other words, for some reason, all the other body tissue would suffer badly, but the fat tissue won't move. Not a gram. Very much like addictions, your body gives you the impression you need more alcohol, drugs or nicotine (in this case food), but the truth is you have more than enough of all that. And so, in frustration and desperation, for the hundredth time, you bury your face in your hands and shout to yourself: "Damn!! If only there was a link, or bridge or something that could activate all that unnecessary body weight and turn it into energy to supply my normal life activities. It would be so wonderful!" It surely would, we say. Or better, there is such a thing! That missing part, the golden key to open the steal door to the safely secured body fat can be delivered by practicing Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong. It is the practice that activates and uses all those unwanted kilos, so that you naturally reduce or completely stop food intake in the process. Not the other way around, ie stop eating to reduce weight. It's like a helping hand that safely leads you to the other side without pain, frustration or irritation. Not only that, most people who lost weight from practicing Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong felt great right along the way. They enjoyed the practice, did all their normal life activities, plus had a clearer mind (many students had improved their studies during the diet). On top of that, their health improved, especially those with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar levels, fatty liver and abnormal liver function. Many studies also showed that unwanted weight disappeared from the places where it is especially unwanted, such as the buttock and abdomen area, but this varies from individual to individual. To prove Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong's results scientifically, Chinese scientists used all the relevant objective measures (prior to and after the completion of the courses), such as measuring their waist, using an ultrasound to measure the fat layer under the skin (10cm above and 10cm below the belly button) and, of course, weighed them regularly. On average, the fat layer below the navel, would decrease by 6mm a day, some people would lose up to 10 kilos a fortnight, even though on average it would be somewhere between 3-5 kilos. Best of all is that, after one stops the practice, the reduced body weight seldom comes back. Even if it does (in minority cases) it can be easily regulated by the same exercises, giving the individuals a precious means of weight control.
Weight Loss Qigong Typical Case Histories Following are some case histories collected from Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong "stations" across China, showing the benefits of Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong. Some of them include diagnosis' given by their respective doctors. However, the diagnosis' do not necessarily reflect their true condition or mean that Weight Loss Qigong can cure such conditions. Case 1 Female, Age 32 Before child birth, my normal weight was always around 55-60kg (120-130 lb), but in 1984 after giving birth to my son, my weight increased. Originally, I thought it would come back to normal after a year or two. But after four years, it didn't even stop increasing. At this stage, my weight was 83.5kg (184 lb). This excess weight I was carrying brought me a lot of pressure and angst. I worried a lot and felt helpless to do anything about it. To make it worse, many people do not understand the way overweight people feel and often they hurt our feelings with their fat jokes. For that reason I started avoiding going out and meeting friends. From a socially active person, I became quiet and withdrawn. Excess body weight brought me other problems too. For instance, whenever I wanted to buy clothes, they never had my size. My self esteem suffered, especially when my friends looked so good in their fashionable gear. Just barely over 30, I had to wear middle age fashion - it made me feel old. So for the past few years, this weight problem was constantly on my mind. And I tried constantly to find a solution. I was searching and tried many different methods of losing weight. Every time I read an article in a magazine or paper, see an ad or hear from a friend about a new method, I would try it. But, whether it was because of me not persevering long enough or I did not have faith in those methods, they did not work for me. I visited specialist clinics and took various weight loss herbal teas and products. I got very little results. Still, I didn't give up on searching, I strongly believed there was hope. And then, I enrolled in Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong. Very quickly I learned the techniques and the results I got from this method were extraordinary, I started losing weight from day one. Within less than a month I effortlessly lost more than 10 kilos (22 lb). I was extremely thrilled. Something that I hoped for years would happen, happened within less than a month. My husband was on a business trip that month, so when he came back, he was pleasantly surprised. I continued practicing Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong for another month everyday without fail. I was not craving as much food and often didn't eat anything at all. And I lost another 10 kilos. At this stage I got back to my 60 kilos which was my weight, pre-birth. My waist reduced from 90 to 67 cms (ie. from 35 to 26 inches) and my hips went from 110 to 80 cms (ie. from 43 to 31 inches). I felt much lighter and more agile. My friends and colleagues could not believe the change, they all found me unrecognisable. I am a new person and my old self again. Case 2 Male, Age 27 Most people when mentioning Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong praise its weight loss aspect. But to me, it not only helped with my weight problem, more importantly, it helped me get rid of my hepatitis that I suffered from for years. A few years back when I had some tests done, the doctors found that I had some liver function abnormalities (GPT) and I was diagnosed with hepatitis. Three years later, at one stage, my tests got better, but soon after, I got busy at work and my liver problem relapsed. I was hospitalised several times, being treated by both western and Chinese medicine, but without great results. My GPT skyrocketed to more than 100 units, when normally it should be below 30. A year later, they also found that I had fatty liver and I felt very depressed. Due to getting lots of bed rest, plus eating high calorie foods, I gradually put on a lot of weight. At the age of 27, height 179cm (5.9 foot) I ended up with 93 kilos (205 lb) and my waist was 98.5cm (38.8 inch). I enrolled in Weight Loss Qigong to give it a try and on the first day I lost 1 kilo (2.2 lb). On the third day though, I felt some dizziness and it felt like I was walking on cotton. I complained to my teacher and they considered that it is due to my liver problem, so they suggested I don't completely stop eating food. I was given a diet in which I was meant to have some rice, vegies, fruit, meat and fish, however, the amount was limited. With this diet, I kept practicing for two months and lost 13 kilos (28.5 lb). My GPT values dropped to 34 and the ultrasound showed no signs of fatty liver. I was ecstatic. I continued practicing for another month and my liver function was completely normal. My weight reduced to 75 kilos (165 lb) and my waist was 80cm (31.5 inch). I went back to work and many of my colleagues could not recognise me. Case 3 Female, Age 34 Before I practiced Weight Loss Qigong I weighed 82 kg (180 lb). Apart from my weight problem, I suffered from discus hernia and my fat stomach made it even worse. Due to my discus hernia (ie. slipped disc between vertebrae, pressing on a nerve of the spine) the pain in my back was pretty bad and my ability to move freely was limited. I worked as a welder and as I was not able to bend, I was forced to kneel, so after a day's work, both my back and legs hurt. I was constantly taking sick leave. Since I started Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong, I was amazed with the results it brought. On the first day I lost 1 kg (2.2 lb). After a week, I lost more than 5 kg (11 lb). This sort of result increased my confidence so much that I firmly decided to stick to it till the end. For one week, I only ate fruit and vegetables and did not feel hungry at all. During practicing Weight Loss Qigong I kept going to work as usual, but what was strange was that I had even more energy than before. After two months, my weight dropped to 57 kg (125.5 lb) and my waist reduced from 92 to 66 cm (36 to 26 inch). My skin became soft, smooth and lustrous. What made me even more happy was that my back problem healed. Before practicing Weight Loss and Beauty Qigong, I visited many hospitals and doctors, I received acupuncture, massage and other sorts of treatments. Some of them quite unpleasant and painful, but the overall result was nowhere near as favourable as this one. In the end, I was put on a waiting list for an operation on the discus hernia. Luckily, I found Weight Loss Qigong before I went down that road. As it was, the doctors suggested I lose weight before I have the operation and so, not only did I lose my excess weight, I also got rid of my back problem in the process. Before I lost the weight, I looked old and pale and even though I was 30 years old then, some kids would treat me like a granny (even call me that), but now I look and feel younger than my age, four years down the track.
